Students prepare protests against Trump in Houston

By Fabian Van Onzin

Houston, TX – On June 17, Donald Trump will be holding a fundraiser in Houston to raise money for his campaign of racism, hatred and fear. The event will be held at the home of Tony Buzbee, a notoriously right wing lawyer who represented criminals like Rick Perry, the former governor of Texas. Buzbee's home is located in River Oaks, the most bourgeois neighborhood in town that houses the richest capitalists of Houston. Trump is charging $5000 for people to have their photo taken with him, and over $250,000 to spend an evening with him.

Progressive students and activists in Houston are organizing a large protest against Trump when he comes to town.

Angelica Hernandez, an organizer with Students for a Democratic Society says, “Trump is a hateful, war-mongering imperialist who represents the most racist and reactionary sectors of society. He hates Muslims and is xenophobic. Therefore, we will not allow him in our city, and when he comes, we will give him hell. We hope that you will join us in letting Trump know that he is not welcome in Houston, nor in any other community of the U.S.”

The students organizing the protest are also organizing transportation to Cleveland in July to protest at the Republican National Convention. They are asking for donations in order to raise funds to send students to Cleveland.

The Houston protest will assemble on Friday, June 17, 3:15 p.m., at the corner of Claremont and San Felipe. There will be some speeches by progressive activists, followed by a Trump piñata and a march to the home of Tony Buzbee at 4:00, where the main rally will take place. The protest is being organized by Students for a Democratic Society.
