It is not acceptable to ask for documents

I am a US citizen; however I do look hispanic. So my question is, do I need to carry a US passport in my own country? Because an ID does not show my status in this country. My social security card or birth certificate does not have my picture on it. SERIOUSLY, I CAN'T BELIEVE I NEED TO CARRY A PASSPORT IN MY OWN COUNTRY,
