On May 17, Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke announced his appointment as Assistant Secretary to the Department of Homeland Security. Clarke will run the Office of Partnership and Engagement, which connects police and sheriff departments around the country to Homeland Security’s work.

On March 7, management of the Milwaukee Public Museum (MPM) announced layoffs an cuts to hours for 14 members of AFSCME Local 526, which is 8% of the workforce. After six months of negotiations and two quick months after contract ratification, these hard-working men and women found out with zero warning that their position at the museum will either be cut or working hours permanently reduced. Those who are facing reduced hours will lose their health benefits and livable wages to support their families.

On Monday, Aug. 15, Mayor Tom Barrett announced a city-wide 10 p.m. curfew for teenagers. Sheriff David Clarke announced that Sherman Park, where many protests have been held, would be closed from 6 p.m. Monday until 6 a.m. Tuesday.

The Sherman Park neighborhood became the scene of a Ferguson-like uprising after a police killing of a Black man on Saturday afternoon, Aug. 13. At 3:30 p.m., a Milwaukee cop shot and killed a 23-year-old man they said was running away from them, near 44th and Auer Avenue.
