On Dec. 26, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe paid a visit to the Yasukuni Shrine in Japan’s capital, Tokyo. The new nationalist Japanese government is continuing to increase military tensions with China by sending naval forces and military aircraft to the islands, which are occupied by Japan, which calls them the Senkaku Islands. In addition, the U.S. still recognizes the Japanese occupation and says that it will back Japan militarily under the U.S.-Japan Security Treaty.

The New China News Agency (Xinhua) reported Jan. 14 that China’s Foreign Ministry voiced its "strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition" to the United States' decision to impose sanctions on a Chinese company, the Zhuhai Zhenrong Corporation.
