U of MN SDS builds local momentum for hosting the 2014 national convention

By staff

Minneapolis, MN — On July 26, dozens of Twin Cities activists gathered in South Minneapolis to support the University of Minnesota’s Students for a Democratic Society (UMN SDS) chapter in its push to promote and fundraise for the 2014 SDS National Convention. UMN SDS joined with local anti-war groups in organizing the community party to generate both funds and excitement for Minneapolis’ selection as the hosting site for the SDS National Convention in mid-October.

Over the past year, SDS has joined with veteran anti-war activists to oppose U.S. intervention in Syria, to keep war-criminal Condoleezza Rice from speaking at the University of Minnesota and to support Palestinian resistance to Israel’s recent U.S.-backed assault on Gaza.

UMN SDS has continuously worked to build relationships with the greater Twin Cities anti-war community and as a result had a high level of support for its fundraising efforts around hosting the 2014 SDS National Convention.

At the SDS fundraiser party, organizers spoke about the unexpected hikes in the cost of reserving rooms at the U of M and about their hope to offset the costs of travel to the convention for groups on the leading edge of student struggle across the country.

The [Rosenberg Fund for Children](http://www.rfc.org/) was also highlighted as a key sponsor of this year's convention. Jenn Meeropol, granddaughter of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, will be attending this year's convention and participating in the political repression plenary.

Students for a Democratic Society was re-formed in 2006. UMN SDS member Matt Boynton said, “The anti-war community has supported us for years and we are happy they continue to not only support our chapter, but the national organization as well. We hope other SDS chapters can reach out to veteran activists in their own cities to both build relationships and generate a buzz around this year's SDS convention.”

The SDS National Convention will take place on Oct. 11-12 at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. Please [click here to make donations to UMN SDS](https://umnsds.wordpress.com/2014/06/06/support-the-2014-sds-natl-convention-donate-to-sds/).
