Anaheim, CA - Hundreds marched on the Anaheim Police Headquarters, July 29, to protest police killings of young Chicano men. The protesters confronted the police with chants, shouts and banners denouncing these brutal and racist killings. The Anaheim Police Department (APD) has carried out a rash of killings this year, far more than previous years. Two people have been killed in the past week.
The protesters were met with a heavy, militarized police presence including horses, helicopters, armored cars and cops on rooftops with shot guns ready.
The family of Cesar Ray Cruz, killed by the APD in 2009, held up a banner demanding justice and a poster with the pictures of nine other men killed by APD. They also denounced the recent killing of Manuel Diaz. Diaz who was shot in the back and back of head on July 21 in front of the families of North Anna Street, a working class Chicano community. On July 24, the family of Manuel Diaz filled a civil rights violation lawsuit in U.S. Federal Court demanding justice and $50 million.
The demonstrators attempted to march on nearby Disneyland, but were blocked by the police. Many drivers going by the protest honked and waved to show support.
Many Chicano groups joined the demonstration, including Chicanos Unidos de Anaheim, Brown Berets, Partido Nacional de La Raza Unida and the Southern California Immigration Coalition, to name a few. The Occupy movement, along with socialist and anarchist groups also participated.
Carlos Montes and other veteran Chicano activists participated and spoke with the Cruz family to express their support and solidarity.
Orange County has a long history of racist attacks and practices against the growing Chicano community. The city developers have plans to expand the amusement park resort and some feel that they want to dislocate the large Chicano community.

Nobody is neutral
You’re barking up the wrong tree if you’re hoping to take Fight Back News to task for not being neutral. Fight Back doesn't believe that journalists are neutral. In a society so sharply divided into rich and poor, and with such a pronounced white supremacist history that continues to the present day, everyone’s perspective is stamped with the outlook of one class or another. Fight Back states clearly that it takes the side of the people against the rule of the rich & powerful.
If you click on the “About” link at the top of the page, it very clearly states:
“This newspaper exists to build the people's struggle! We provide coverage and analysis of some of the key battles facing working and low-income people. We are not ‘neutral’ or ‘even-handed’ in our coverage. We are opposed to exploitation, discrimination, and oppression. We hold that the rich class of people who run the economy and government of this country are unfit to rule. We support all movements that challenge their power and privilege.”
There are plenty of mainstream media outlets who piously proclaim their neutrality while acting as stenographers for the powerful. Fight Back is about reporting from the streets, from the protests, from the people in struggle challenging the rich & powerful. Fight Back takes a side, no apologies.
And yes, comments here are moderated. Almost every website has some sort of comment moderation policy, and those that don’t usually quickly devolve into unproductive name-calling flame wars and spam farms. Fight Back’s moderation policy is quite open and is clearly stated on the website. The policy that guides moderation is here: http://www.fightbacknews.org/comments-policy.
Comments policy
“Fight Back! News is a news service for the people. Accordingly, we value comments on articles and political dialogue. To make sure this space is productive and inclusive, we enforce the following rules:
1. No racist, anti-woman, anti-gay, or otherwise oppressive comments.
2. No personal attacks, slander, or threats against authors or other commentors.
3. No vulgar language or profanity.
We reserve the right to remove any comments that violate these guidelines.”
That should be pretty easy to follow. So if you disagree with something you see here, by all means reply with a comment and stir up some debate. Some articles here have stirred up sharp debates with dozens of comments taking different positions (for example see articles on Ron Paul, welfare policy, etc). Discussion, debate and disagreement are welcome. Be more specific about what you disagree with in the article, and lets discuss!
ugh and moderator approval on
ugh and moderator approval on any comments. way to control your critics. What they did was wrong, but what you are doing with this article is just as wrong. state the facts, keep your opinion out of it. Oh, and publish the name of the "journalist" that posted this.
really poor biased writing.
really poor biased writing. Journalism is supposed to be non biased well, "journalism" and "fightbacknews.org" seem to be two separate things.
