Welfare Rights Committee pickets at Governors' mansion

St. Paul, MN – Members and supporters of the Welfare Rights Committee held signs outside the Governors’ mansion, June 8, to send the message “No cuts to poor and working people” and “Tax the rich, or shut government down.”

State government will shut down on July 1 if an agreement is not reached on how to address the $5.2 billion budget shortfall. Years of tax cuts to corporations and the wealthy cause large budget shortfalls anytime there is an economic downturn. The legislative session ended May 23. Now the governor and legislators are in negotiations over the budget.

“Republicans continue to push the state toward a government shut-down. For working and poor, disabled and elderly Minnesotans, a government shut-down would by far be a better outcome than the deadly cuts that Republicans are trying to force down our throats,” stated Deb Konechne of the Welfare Rights Committee.

After getting many waves and honks of support from drivers on Summit Avenue, the group headed to the governor’s office at the state capitol building to read and deliver a statement.
