Over 1,500 rallied yesterday at UC Berkeley.
Berkeley, CA - While the University of California's Board of Regents were at UCLA voting to increase the cost of education by a whopping 32%, students, labor and faculty from across the state were fighting back.
At UC Berkeley, staff unions called a strike to protest the regents' plan of layoffs and cutbacks as well as the proposed fee hikes. A noon rally and march of thousands featured a militant message of unity and resistance to the regents' attack on lower income and oppressed nationality students. The strike and other actions are to continue throughout the day on Nov. 19 and 20.

Repression at UC Berkeley
Today, Thursday there were spirited picket lines and another noon rally in front of California Hal.
The following was forwarded to me by one of the organizers of the events at UC Berkeley:
"the cops have been aggressively closing down planned protests and events timed to coincide with the Regents’ Meeting [at UCLA]. Yesterday, UCPD prevented the tent city from being set up and closed down the planned solidarity party in Bear’s Lair. Today they prevented the Open University teach-ins, organized by faculty, from happening even though they were taking place in an open public space. The cops have also made it clear that they will not permit, and will aggressively oppose, any other mass actions over the next 48 hours. ... We must show the administration that we will not take this lying down. We cannot allow this outrageous provocation and violation of our basic rights to freedom of expression and assembly. If we are to maintain and ultimately win our struggle against this latest assault on public education, then we must stand collectively against the repressive actions of the UC administration."
