Minneapolis:
Over 100 Join Human Rights Day Anti-War Event

Minneapolis, MN - Over 100 people joined a Dec. 10 anti-war protest here to mark International Human Rights Day. The event, organized by the Anti-War Committee, one of the most active local anti-war groups, drew connections between the U.S. war in Iraq and other U.S. foreign and domestic policies.

Despite the cold weather, participants marched several blocks along Lake Street, with many drivers honking and giving signs of support. After the march, a rally was held at Spirit of the Lakes Church.

The Anti-War Committee (AWC) sponsored the event in order to, “Commemorate International Human Rights Day with a march and protest to call for an end to the U.S. war in Iraq and for a change in U.S. policies around the world. The United States government ignores international human rights standards through the military occupation of Iraq, at the same time as funding grave human rights abuses by the Israeli and Colombian governments.”

The AWC demanded: “End the occupation of Iraq; bring the troops home now! Stop funding Israel’s occupation of Palestine and Colombia’s war against its own people! Start spending tax dollars on health care, schools and families, not on war and occupation!”

At the rally, AWC member Jessica Sundin said, “There has been much buzz in Congress about an exit strategy. Some of the politicians are starting to talk about reducing troops a little now and more later. The fact is, today there are more than 160,000 U.S. troops stationed in Iraq. A few will go home after the election. Maybe a few more will go home next summer. But we should not be confused: The occupation will not end until the war is won or lost - until Iraq is won or lost.”
