From the Editor
Dear readers,
We know that you are sick and tired of corporate newspapers and their corporate lies - that you have had enough of media that is a mouthpiece for the rich. We know this because each year so many of you have contributed so generously to our yearly fundraising drives. With the publication of this issue of Fight Back!, we are starting our 2004 campaign. We urge you to send your contributions to the paper that rejects corporate America and everything it stands for.
In each of issue of Fight Back! we drive home the point that the elite who run this country do not give a damn about the rest of us. In fact, they want to make things worse for working people and to profit from our hardships. Case in point: United Airlines. The airline’s owners are preparing to rob workers of the pensions they were promised. Workers paid in and made concessions to keep their pensions, but now face a situation where retirees could well end up with nothing. This is the ugly face of capitalism in America today. Fight Back! exists to expose, organize against and ultimately abolish this kind of abuse. Your contributions will help to make this possible.
Fight Back! gives voice to the struggle of working, oppressed and poor people. Chicago police killed Puerto Rican activist May Molina. Then the police claimed she had drugs on her. Fight Back! was the first newspaper to expose this lie. When Minnesota miners were rallying against the union-busting schemes of the taconite companies, Fight Back! was there. A massive struggle has developed in response to the raids on immigrant workers in California. This is another front of struggle that Fight Back! is committed to covering in an ongoing way.
Recently we moved from putting out four issues a year to publishing five times a year. This will allow us to cover more struggles with more depth.
Over the last three years, we have worked to steadily expand our international coverage. We have done so because Bush has launched a series of wars to expand Wall Street’s empire. Fortunately, Fight Back! has excellent contacts with those who are resisting this empire all over the world - from Palestine to the Philippines. In this issue of the paper there are eyewitness reports from Colombia and Venezuela.
None of this would be possible without you. Every dollar you send makes this paper bigger and better. We are sure that you will make this fundraising drive the most successful yet.
